Once you’ve selected your rental car you can add a selection of extras including child seats and a GPS. Read on to find out the details.
When placing your booking, you’ll find the options to add a GPS unit or child seats below the details of your selected vehicle. If the equipment is available at the time of booking, the cost will be added to the booking.
Be aware that some car rental providers place their equipment “on request” so the cost may not be added at the time of booking. The VroomVroomVroom customer care team will follow up with you to let you know the equipment has been added to your booking before providing you with the updated cost.
If you do not see an option in the booking flow to add extras, please call our customer care team for assistance.
When booking a rental car, it’s important to be mindful of the laws around child seats in New Zealand. It’s the legal responsibility of the driver to ensure all passengers are secured in the vehicle correctly, including having children in the appropriate restraints. If your child is six months old or younger, a rear-facing child seat is required. Children under the age of seven should never sit in the front of the car, and depending on their age, may need to be fastened into a child seat of some kind.
If you’ll be travelling with a child or children younger than 7 years old (or shorter than 148cm), you’ll need to consider what kind of child seat you’ll need for your rental car.
In New Zealand, children under the age of seven must be secured in an approved restraint suitable for their age and size. As a general guide, the New Zealand Transport Agency recommends the following:
Children under 2 years old: Rear-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness. Capsules are not available to hire from car rental companies, only rear-facing seats.
2 years old to 4 years old: Forward-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness.
4 years old to 7 years old: Forward-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness or a booster seat with a harness.
Over 7 years old: Booster seat with a harness. If your child is taller than 148cm, they’ll be able to use the standard seat and adult seatbelt.
If you need to add a rear-facing, forward-facing child seat, or a booster seat to your booking, you can do so during the booking process depending on availability. If the option for child seats is “on request,” our team will contact you to confirm your request and let you know the updated cost.
If you have already made your booking, you can request a child seat by contacting our customer care team.
In the instance you require more than two child seats, you’ll need to contact us directly as this request will depend on availability and the type of vehicle you are renting. Remember, it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure all passengers are secured in the vehicle correctly, including having children in the appropriate restraints.
Car rental providers in New Zealand will generally add a daily fee to your booking for each child seat, and the cost of the child seat will depend on which rental provider you book with. Check the Terms and Conditions of your prospective provider for current pricing.
If you’re planning to drive in New Zealand’s Auckland, Christchurch, or Wellington—or any urban areas—a GPS unit will make navigating unfamiliar streets a lot easier.
Depending on unit availability, you’ll be able to add a GPS to your rental car upon booking. If the GPS unit is listed as “on request,” our team will get in touch with you to confirm your GPS and the updated cost of your booking.
If there is no option to add a GPS when booking—or if you’ve already placed your booking — feel free to contact our customer care team.
Like child seats, rental providers will charge a daily fee for any GPS devices added to your booking. These GPS devices are subject to availability, and the daily cost of the GPS unit will vary depending on your rental provider. Refer to the Terms and Conditions of your selected provider for current pricing.
Important InformationWhen you reserve optional extras
Generally, child seats and GPS units are available for hire at an additional daily cost. It’s important you book these extras in advance to ensure availability. Please note that if you do book extras, the items will be your responsibility and will not be covered by vehicle insurance. Charges will apply for lost or damaged items.
