What are kilometre limits?

If you’re planning a long road trip, the costs incurred through kilometre limits can add up fast. Read on to learn more.

In some cases, kilometre limits may apply to your car rental booking in New Zealand. Car rental companies sometimes apply a limit on the amount of kilometres you can travel per day and if you exceed these limits, you’ll generally be charged a fee for each additional kilometre you travel over the specified limit. Sometimes referred to as a “mileage limit”, in New Zealand it is known as a kilometre limit as the country uses kilometres not miles.

Do all rental cars in New Zealand come with a kilometre limit?

No. In most cases the hire car you rent will come with unlimited kilometres meaning you can drive it for as many kilometres as you wish. In cases where there is a kilometre limit, this will be displayed in the “Important Information” box within the VroomVroomVroom booking flow.

Inter-island travel

Please note that even if you have unlimited kilometres, this does not necessarily mean you are permitted to drive your rental car to both the North and South Island using the ferry service. Only some rental car providers allow inter-island car rentals.

How much will I be charged if I exceed the kilometre limit?

For each kilometre you travel over the specified limit, you will be charged. This amount differs according to the car rental company you have hired your car with, but where applicable it will be noted in the above-mentioned Important Information box. This amount is subject to local taxes and surcharges.
