Finding the perfect gift for Father’s Day can sometimes seem impossible, but booking a rental car and taking your dad on a memorable road trip around New Zealand might just be the next best thing.
If your Dad is big on classic cars and vintage motorcycles, you can’t miss the Wild Wheels event. It is usually held at Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT), where rare vehicles from across the region come together for an event hosting live music and delicious food.
If you’re flying into Auckland / Tāmaki Makaurau, you can always collect a rental car from the airport or one of the city depots. That way, you’ll be able to explore the city and make your own way to the Wild Wheels events.
Other stops: There are a lot of sights to see in Auckland / Tāmaki Makaurau. On the north shore, visit popular beaches like Takapuna, which is within easy driving distance of the city. The interesting suburb of Devonport is also worth visiting, and nearby, you can take in the view of the city from Mount Victoria.
If your Dad is keen on bungy jumping or ziplining, Queenstown / Tāhuna might just be the perfect place to take him for Father’s Day. Not only is Queenstown / Tāhuna a scenic paradise, but there’s so much to do, including jet skiing, skydiving, and more.
You can pick up your rental car from Queenstown International Airport and drive into town. Otherwise, you also have the option of collecting a vehicle from one of the downtown depots.
Other stops: Make the most of your rental car by exploring the surrounding areas. You could take a day trip to Lake Wanaka via Crown Range Road, or visit the charming locale of Arrowtown. Otherwise, one of New Zealand’s most famous landmarks, Milford Sound, is only a four-hour drive away.
One of the best ways to enjoy Father’s Day is by visiting the magnificent vineyards in Marlborough. Choose from one of the top local cafes and restaurants to enjoy a Father’s Day meal, and enjoy some delicious samples from the local wineries.
You can fly into Blenheim Airport, collect a rental car, and start exploring. If travelling from the North Island, you can also pick up a rental car from the Picton / Waitohi Ferry Terminal and drive south to Marlborough.
Other stops: Once you’ve visited some of Marlborough’s vineyards, you’ll find there are plenty of other attractions worth checking out. There are some great hiking trails in the area, and if you pay a visit to the neighbouring town of Nelson, you’ll find some beautiful natural scenery.
