The per-day rates of some rental cars may fall if you book for a longer rental period. Prices often change around daily, three-day, five-day and seven-day periods. Also, note that the selection of rental cars available in Hertz may be more limited if you are looking for a long-term car rental, so it’s best to compare a few different booking durations first.
AMEX, Mastercard, and Visa credit cards are accepted for rental vehicle payments with Hertz. The nominated card must have available funds equal to the estimated cost of the rental, plus a security bond in order to secure the booking.
Hertz requires a security deposit for any incidental charges related to your rental car. This involves a rental deposit pre-authorisation hold on your card for the duration of your rental. The deposit amount, also known as a holding deposit, bond, or deposit hold, varies depending on the type of hire vehicle and the rental location. The deposit return involves the removal of the pre-authorisation from your card (pending any additional charges) immediately upon the return of your rental vehicle. The deposit refund can take three to seven days to appear on your account — this delay is dependent on your bank.
The Hertz age restrictions for rental car drivers requires a minimum age of 21 years old. Drivers aged between 21 and 24 may need to pay a young driver fee, which will vary depending on the chosen vehicle. Drivers under the age of 25 may be restricted from hiring some types of rental cars including prestige vehicles. While Hertz does not have an upper age limit for drivers, they recommend carrying a medical certificate stating one is fit to drive for drivers over the age of 75.
Hertz accepts any valid driver licence that has been held for at least 12 months. The licence must be printed in English, otherwise an International Driving Permit (IDP) will be required. Learning permits aren’t accepted under Hertz’s driver licence requirements. Hertz also recommends that renters wanting to use a digital licence also carry a hard copy of their licence. Hertz also has further requirements based on where you live and where you wish to collect a rental car from. We suggest you check the Important Information box provided in the booking flow to ensure you understand all of the requirements.
Yes, Hertz allows you to add extra drivers to your Rental Agreement, but their additional driver policy subjects the drivers to the same regulations as the primary driver, and they are limited to the number of passengers the vehicle is legally licensed to carry. A second driver and each extra driver after the first will attract an additional driver fee, with the overall charge for additional drivers capped to a maximum charge per rental period. For further information, please see the “Important Information” section for details specific to your rental vehicle.
Yes. Hertz includes a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) in the hire car rental quote, but if the vehicle is stolen, involved in an accident, is damaged in some other way, or a third-party loss occurs while the vehicle is in your possession, the Hertz damage policy holds that you’ll have to pay the damage charges up to the Rental Vehicle Excess amount listed in your Hertz Rental Agreement. The excess refers to the amount you are liable for before the basic cover applies and the amount of this damage excess can vary depending on the type of vehicle, the age of the renter, and a number of other variables. For an extra daily cost, Hertz offers excess reduction coverage in the form of a Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) which reduces the excess charge, but be sure to read through your detailed Rental Agreement to see what car damage is and is not covered. Prosura is another excess insurance option to consider if you are looking for comprehensive excess reduction coverage.
There’s no charge for roadside assistance related to mechanical issues with a Hertz rental car. However, if the call-out is for a problem not inherent to the vehicle, for example if you locked the keys in the vehicle, or you get a flat tire or flat battery, or need a towing service, a roadside assistance fee will be charged to your nominated credit card. To learn more, including the specific charges for Hertz roadside assistance, please see the “Important Information” section for details specific to your rental vehicle.
You are responsible for paying tolls directly to the toll provider. If you do not pay yourself, you will be charged by Hertz along with a surcharge for each toll. For more information, please see the “Important Information” section for details specific to your rental vehicle.
While the terms mileage and mileage limit are commonly used, in New Zealand the distances used in these policies are measured in kilometres. Unless your rental car has unlimited kilometres, a kilometre limit on driving distance applies to your Hertz rental car, and the daily kilometre allowance will be shown on your Rental Agreement. If you drive in excess of the allowed kilometres per day, an extra kilometre charge may apply for the additional distance.
If you return your rental vehicle to Hertz with less fuel than it started with, according to their fuel policy, Hertz will charge you at a premium rate per litre to refuel the vehicle.
If your hire car rental period is yet to commence, you can modify your booking within the VroomVroomVroom app or by contacting our customer care team to make the required changes. If you have already collected your Hertz hire car, you’ll need to contact the depot you collected the vehicle from to request an extra day — or whatever extension period is desired. Bear in mind that any change to the rental period — regardless of if it is before you have collected the car or after — may alter the total cost of your hire car. If you need to cancel your booking, if you paid a deposit at the time of your booking with Hertz through VroomVroomVroom, then you need to give at least 48 hours notice of your cancellation in order to receive a refund.
The Terms and Conditions outline the rental terms for hiring a vehicle supplied by Hertz can vary depending on the exact vehicle hired, the age of the driver, the length of the hire period, and a number of other conditions.
